Designing a Multifunctional Family Space: From Playroom to Snug and Guest Suite

I believe that design is for life and it is my aim to help my clients create spaces that support their everyday living.

Your home should evolve as your life does, whether that is as children grow up or as your working arrangments shift, your home should be a space that reflects and supports the way you live.

Snug

Recently, I worked on renovating a space that had been a playroom for small children, connected to open plan living area transform into somewhere with a little more privacy for both the parents and the older children as they headed into the next phase of family life.

As the family life evolved throughout the years and the children have grown from toddlers to pre-teens, this room became non functional and needed to change.

We looked through the requirements to make sure the space was supporting the family’s lifestyle and realised that the room needed to be transformed into a multifunctional space:

  • Still function as a storage for toys and arts & crafts but also able to use it as a studying space

  • Become a more of a private snug type of space for kids to watch movies or have their friends around in

  • Also act as a guest room for when family or friends are staying

Storage was the biggest issue, there was no space for real storage solutions so we decided to close the existing doorway and build a bespoke storage unit on the wall.

This led us to open up the room from the hallway which meant that the room become more private and closed off from the open plan living area.

The built in unit also doubles up as a desk for a studying for the kids too.

For the seating area, I sourced a click clack style sofa bed which allowed for guests to sleep in as well as it is a comfy sofa to watch movies on.

As this room now became a multifunctional room, I wanted to keep the mood and design simple and welcoming. While I didn’t push for colours I kept the room interesting by adding texture and highlighting the natural wood tones on the bespoke unit and the floor.
